The Beacon

I'm sure that most of you have seen the Food Network show; Diner's, Drive-In's, and Dives. Momma and I love that show. One of the places that has been featured on the show is a landmark called The Beacon in Spartanburg, SC. Since Thursday was a holiday which meant no work for moi we decided to drive an hour south and do some shopping and have lunch at The Beacon.

I don't think SC schools were out for Veteran's Day because they were 1,500 middle school students enjoying lunch too.

The same black man has been working at The Beacon since it opened in the early 1960's. When you walk in he yells at you to "Hollar it out" which means please place you order. You then move down the line with you tray an pick up you sweet tea (which is supposed to be world famous but it had lemon flavoring in it and neither I nor momma was crazy about it) and your food.

I got the cheeseburger-a-plenty. My cheeseburger is somewhere underneath the pile of french fries and onion rings. The burger wasn't anything to brag about but the onion rings were very yummy. We were going to get a famous milkshake but all the middle schoolers were in line so we decided to hit up McDonalds for a caramel frappe.

All in all I wouldn't hurry back to The Beacon. It was neat to go but I've definelty had better burgers elsewhere.

Lucky you for having a day off and enjoying it with your mom. We have a cafe in town that food network visited. I love going into little cafes. So fun!!

Good morning from Tokyo!

I was all excited at first because I thought you were talking about "The Beacon" in Oxford, Mississippi. It's a dive, that's for sure, but soooo scrumptious. I'm sorry your trip to the SC Beacon wasn't everything you'd hoped it would be, but I bet it was fun just being able to go.

Enjoy your week!

Warmly,

Elizabeth

How fun! When I get through town again, I'll have to stop and eat there!
